 Best movies about motherhood

Introduction

Motherhood is a wonderful experience, but it can also be stressful. If you're looking for a movie that will make you laugh and cry, here are some of the best movies about motherhood (and fathers) out there:

The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap is a 1961 American comedy film directed by David Swift and written by George Waggner. The film stars Hayley Mills, Maureen O'Hara, and Peter Tewksbury.

The film tells the story of two sisters who are separated when they're children, then reunited as adults with their divorced parents.

The Royal Tenenbaums

The Royal Tenenbaums is a 2004 American comedy-drama film written, co-produced and directed by Wes Anderson. It stars Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Anjelica Huston in their first film together since The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004).

It tells the story of an eccentric family who live in a three-story house on the shore of Lake Michigan; their lives are complicated by their strained relationships with one another.

Babette's Feast

Babette's Feast is a 2004 French film based on the true story of Babette Gellner, a cook who lived in the 19th century. The film follows her life as she runs her restaurant and cares for her husband and children. It's an emotional drama that you'll want to rewatch at least once (or twice).

The Elephant Man

The Elephant Man is about John Merrick, a man who was born with a disfigurement that made him the object of ridicule and shame. The movie shows how Merrick learned to cope with his disability in an era when there were no support groups or resources available to help him learn to live with it.

The film is based on the memoirs of Joseph Carey Merrick who lived from 1857-1908 at the London Hospital for Facial Deformity. He was called "The Elephant Man" because of his large head, long trunk-like nose, broad feet and huge hands (which are shown in detail).

Grace of Monaco

Grace of Monaco is a 2012 French drama film directed by Olivier Dahan. The film stars Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth, who play Grace Kelly and Rainier III, respectively. It is based on the life of Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco.

The film's plot focuses on how she comes to terms with her son's homosexuality after he falls in love with a male model at age 18 (played by Romain Duris).

Black Swan

Black Swan is about a young dancer who is a perfectionist, but when she begins to exhibit strange behavior and emotional instability, she's forced to confront her own demons.

The film stars Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers, the lead dancer in the New York City Ballet Company. The movie follows Nina's journey from star ballerina to desperate mental breakdown as she struggles with an identity crisis of sorts—she feels like an imposter who doesn't fit into her new role at work or life as a mother of two young daughters with husband/manager Darren (Vincent Cassel).

The Help

The Help is a film about the civil rights movement in America. It follows three black maids who work for white families during the 1960s, and how they struggle to get better pay, respect and treatment from their employers. The movie was based on a book by Kathryn Stockett that became an instant success when it was released in August 2011.
